These are new words or phrases that have caught my eye. My definition of a new word is one which is not in the Macquarie Dictionary online.
Some words seem to have more significance than others in terms of reflecting changes in the Australian culture, so I will give each word a Zeitgeist rating (ZG) within a range of 1-10.

This is a small park created in a parking space. The original idea came from San Francisco in 2005 where two co-workers found a parking space nearby, put money in the meter for a couple of hours and quickly created a parklet using a roll of turf, a park bench and a potted tree. Two hours later they packed it all up.

They are not common at the moment but the enthusiasm for them is there so maybe there will be more.

Some scientists in America have come up with a patent-free vaccine called Corbevax. It was produced at the Texas Children’s Hospital Centre for Vaccine Development by Drs Maria Elena Bottazi and Peter Hotez (pictured above). It is a traditional vaccine which introduces a spike protein from the virus into the person to produce an immune response.

It is early days yet but if this vaccine is eventually widely used we will all become familiar with it.

A term from astronomy which arouses a frisson of alarm as we contemplate the fact that we are sharing an orbit with a large lump of rock.

This one has caused a minor ripple but since mostly we don’t know whether we have Omicron or Son or Omicron it has ceased to matter.
