climavore

This word is a trademark that I think is shifting into a generic.  I’m not sure what Daniel Fernández Pascual and Alon Schwabe (pictured above) will think about that since they trademarked the Climavore Diet in 2015.  Their idea was that constant change in the environment has to be part of the choices we make in what we will eat.  We have the four seasons that affect what food is available to us through the year, and now we have climate change as well.

The climavore is not the same as the vegan.  Their ideological starting points are quite different.  The climavore wants to respect the environment.  The vegan wants not to exploit animals. So the vegan will not eat meat but might overlook the amount of processing required to give them their soy milk.  The climavore will eat seafood  (but not farmed salmon because of the environmental damage it does) or chicken (but not beef because of the high greenhouse gases produced by cattle).  The climavore will eat seasonal produce but may shift to plants that don’t require much water in time of drought.  The climavore is constantly aware of their environment and what is best for it in particular circumstances and will adapt their diet as required.  It is an idea that is catching on.
