bachelor's handbag
When I was working on the Australian Word Map I came across the Dapto briefcase which turned out to be a cask of wine. This joke rolled around the country with the location changing. Sometimes, if the buyer was a woman, the briefcase became a handbag, white or red, in which case it could be the Earlwood white handbag or the Balmain red handbag.
I think bachelor’s handbag belongs in this set. It is occasionally the tradie’s handbag or the the bachelor’s briefcase, and it is the supermarket roast chook delivered in a plastic bag with handles (which strengthens the handbag concept). This is an easy meal for a single person. The Betoota Advocate says the roast chook, usually with a Reduced Price sticker on it, is often accompanied by a bag of white bread rolls, coleslaw, and a longneck. Perhaps it should be listed in the Great Australian Cuisine.
