troubleshoot, troubleshot, troubleshooting

It is, of course, troubleshot that is the problem here.  Seriously (and ignoring troubleshat) is it troubleshot or troubleshooted?

Macquarie Dictionary gives troubleshot as the form of the past tense of troubleshoot.  The Oxford English Dictionary gives troubleshot as a headword but doesn’t explain it.  It simply refers the reader to troubleshoot which says nothing about the past tense.  Google Ngram shows a marked surge in frequency for troubleshot from the 1980s on.  But just as I was about to declare for troubleshot, I discovered that Google Ngram gives an equally steep curve for troubleshooted.

Macquarie and the OED ignore troubleshooted and I think we should also.  I find troubleshooted inelegant and clunky.  Let’s push for troubleshot and hope that we leave troubleshooted behind.
