enamoured

We used to be enamoured of various things, but in recent times a hesitancy  has crept in about what the correct following particle should be.  There are quite a few people who think that by is the right choice and that of sounds weird and with is not quite convincing.  This leads to sentences like:

I am enamoured by the SUV.

This is a dangerous situationship, if ever I heard of one.

To enamour is ‘to inspire with love’.  It is a verb that has always been used in the passive.  I was enamoured of [insert one’s true love here].  In a weaker sense it just means ‘enthused about’ and can take of or withHe was enamoured with Indian spirituality.  He was enamoured of herbal teas.

But it does not take by, at least not without serious consequences.  Let me not be enamoured by a steam roller.
