These are new words or phrases that have caught my eye. My definition of a new word is one which is not in the Macquarie Dictionary online.
Some words seem to have more significance than others in terms of reflecting changes in the Australian culture, so I will give each word a Zeitgeist rating (ZG) within a range of 1-10.

This is a jokey name for the glass of wine or whatever alcoholic drink it is that Mummy has at the end of a long day of childminding, playing on the idea that, just as the children have their juice, Mummy has special Mummy juice. It is akin to the office worker’s wine o’clock.

This is quite a popular joke among mothers and families and friends who sympathise with the lot of the childcarer.

Some scientists in America have come up with a patent-free vaccine called Corbevax. It was produced at the Texas Children’s Hospital Centre for Vaccine Development by Drs Maria Elena Bottazi and Peter Hotez (pictured above). It is a traditional vaccine which introduces a spike protein from the virus into the person to produce an immune response.

It is early days yet but if this vaccine is eventually widely used we will all become familiar with it.

The difference between an atmospheric river and an ordinary cloud band is that they are extremely narrow.

A term from astronomy which arouses a frisson of alarm as we contemplate the fact that we are sharing an orbit with a large lump of rock.

A well-known example of this is the Seinfeld episode which plays with the idea of expressed and repressed emotions, in which George’s father, Frank Costanza, uses the phrase Serenity Now! as his thought stopper to prevent him going into a rage.

A bit of bodybuilding jargon, important because it relates to the argument about the use of drugs in sport, but not much known to people outside that world.

A bit of technical term this one and likely to be forgotten as we relax all restrictions and cease to be concerned about the air we breathe.
