grandma hobby

Apparently the Millennials and Gen X who spend their lives on digital devices and suffer digital burnout as a consequence find relief in analog activities of the sort that their grandmothers did as day-to-day routine.  They are taking up knitting and crocheting, quilting, bread making, carpentry and gardening to achieve that mental relaxation that they seek away from a screen.  These activities they refer to as grandma hobbies.

They like the fact the the activities require some skill but not computer skills, that there is craftsmanship that they are preserving, and that, at the end of it all, they have a reward.  A new jumper, a quilt, a loaf of bread, a book shelf, sweet peas in the garden. This is a trend around the world but apparently the surge in demand in Australia for crochet kits has been enormous.

The oddest grandma hobby is wooden spoon carving.  You could end up with a house full of wooden spoons depending on the degree and frequency of your burnout.
