dead butt syndrome

The formal name for this is gluteal amnesia — which I quite like. The idea of the glutes losing all memory of what they are supposed to do appeals to me.  The condition is also called gluteus medius tendinitis, which is rather a mouthful.  It was recognised in the late 1980s as something that affected desk-bound workers or people who spent long hours driving.  Prolonged sitting caused the gluteus medius muscle to stop responding, which led to lower back pain and hip pain as other muscles tried to accommodate it. Athletes can compound the problem but putting all the strain on the back and hamstrings because the glutes are weak. The incidence of the condition has increased over the years and this has given rise to the common name dead butt syndrome, a coinage which focuses on the numbness of the buttocks felt as you get up from sitting at the desk.
