advocacy interview
This is an accepted type of interview, usually conducted in an effort to lead a client to a solution, particularly in legal matters. The whole conversation is empathetic and supportive, so that together the interviewer and the interviewee can reach a good solution. The interviewer begins by establishing trust and rapport, and at all times is sensitive to the client’s need to speak, giving the client a sense of empowerment. In cases where trauma is involved the interviewer needs to tread warily, and in cases where the interviewee is advance in years and suffering perhaps from memory loss, then particular skill is required. The need for advocacy interviewing is well understood.
But when the technique is used to facilitate an interview on Sky News with Benjamin Netanyahu, allowing him to hold forth on his views about the Australian government and Albanese in particular without being seriously questioned but rather being encouraged, then its purpose is subverted.
