officer-induced jeopardy
The inquest into the death an Indigenous youth brought to light this item of legal jargon in relation to the police. The coroner, Elisabeth Armitage (pictured above) mentioned that officer-induced jeopardy might have been a factor and explained that this is a dangerous situation created unnecessarily by the actions of the police and leading to a crisis which requires the use of deadly force. This crisis is used by the police to justify their actions particularly if the outcome is the death of the person they are apprehending, but that justification is no longer valid if it can be shown that the crisis was in fact created by the police.
