protein shake

Way back in the 1950s the protein supplement was introduced into the food market, initially as something to assist the sick and the elderly.  But in recent years it has become a fad, an obsession, with some alarming health consequences. The favoured way of taking the protein is in a milkshake, although a protein smoothie is an alternative.  The drink is popular with those who wish to build muscle although it is clear that exercise is the best way of doing this and carbohydrates are what you burn in doing that exercise.  There is no way the protein in the drink is going to magically transfer into the muscle.  Others take the drink from the conviction that protein is good for you, although normal Australians eating a normal diet get enough protein anyway so there is no need for a supplement.  Overloading the system simply puts pressure on the kidneys which have to then get rid of the excess protein.  As is always the way, excess consumption of one particular food item can have dangerous consequences.
