porch pirate

This kind of pirate was named in the US where porches are common.  Australia Post has generalised the term to cover theft from any place not regarded as a safe location such as the lobby of an apartment building or the row of letterboxes outside (the parcel being stacked on top).  Delivery people are required to take a picture of the parcel in situ to show that they have delivered it to a safe place.  It should not be viewable from the street because we know that most porch piracy is opportunistic.

Apparently this kind of theft has been experienced by one in four people, a rate which seems quite high. The pirates, by contrast, have a good success rate because most law enforcement agencies will advise that the victim of piracy ask for a refund for their goods in preference to having them make a vain attempt to pursue the pirate.

There is even a porch pirate garden gnome.  However I don’t think anyone has approached Johnny Depp to do the movie yet.
