humane washing

This is the latest variant on whitewashing, greenwashing, etc.  In this instance the washing is the process of giving a misleading impression in marketing that a product has been created without any ill-treatment of animals.  Common styles of advertising rely on words such as ‘natural’ and ‘cage-free’ and ‘responsibly raised’ to pretty images of animals in green pastures (when in fact they are in dark sheds).

A verb has also emerged.  X company has attempted to humane wash its new product.
