stump speech

Everything to do with stumping in politics, that is, making campaign speeches on the way to an election is labelled as American English in the Macquarie Dictionary. And while in general terms this is still true, and we do not talk about being on the stump, we do seem to have picked up on the idea of a stump speech, which can be a campaign speech or a speech in that style designed to rally the troops. Morrison is making a stump speech to the members of the coalition that will be short on policy but long on harrahs and congratulations and general satisfaction with the results of the election.
