This is the verb, to smug, meaning ‘to behave in a complacent and disrespectful fashion towards someone’.  There are a number of different meanings for the verb. There is an obsolete one meaning ‘to spruce up’ as in He smugged his beard. Then there is relatively recent American shortening of smuggleas in to smug something in under your coat.  There is the meaning you might expect, that is, ‘to say in a smug fashion’. Oh but there is a way, she smugged. And there is this one which turned up during the recent election when ScoMo was accused of smugging the electorate.
