hempcrete

This is a mixture of woody hemp fibre from inside the hemp stalk combined with lime and water. The resulting mix is packed into a wooden frame and tamped down to make a wall.  The wall then takes about six weeks to cure but the beauty of it is that the building then continues to soak up carbon dioxide from the air as the lime turns gradually into limestone.

Tasmania is set to become the source of the hemp for Australian builders, adding that to the list of opportunities for their existing hemp market.   The building process is labour intensive, rather like mud brickmaking, but the end result is eco-friendly. And quite mellow.
